Boulangerie: Au Pain d’Antan
This was our last interview for the day – and what a lovely way to end off this portion of our work. A delightful bakery full of steaming hot pastries and piping hot fresh baguettes, alongside a wonderful story of history.
The bakery just so happens to be very close to the cooking school, so when I’m back this fall I will be stopping along the way to pick up a few little treats…
Boucherie Pinon
Unfortunately, we had no time to interview the shop owners or take their portraits. They had just returned from a month of vacation so were busy getting back into the swing of things. The good part is, they allowed me to take just a few quick shots with the promise that we could come back once things had died down a bit, for a more thorough documentation of their business.
I hear these butchers are the best in all of Paris…
We’ll be back in December and I look forward to spending a bit more time in your hot pink shop. See you then!
Les fruits et les légumes: Les Halles de Montmartre
A wonderful place to buy your vegetables and fruit in season…with some of the sweetest guys running the show. You may wonder at first glance if you really can approach them to ask for help, however as soon as you make eye contact, they break out into a smile and rush to help. Funny, helpful AND sweet.
Guys, I’ll be swinging by in a few weeks to pick up my dose of fresh raspberries…I hope to see each of you there. X
Poissonnerie: Les Délices de l’Atlantique
A truly memorable experience for me…probably the happiest, warmest fishmonger I have ever met. And yes, I loved all the bits that make up Alain – his dyed beard, earrings, long hair, pony-tail (and he plays the drums!! How cool…) and yes, the best of all was his smile. Captivating.
Alain, I will be coming back and you are on my list to visit! I can’t wait…
Fromagerie: Quatrehomme
You can find Marwen’s Facebook page here. If ever you are in Paris, be sure to pop in this shop even if just to sample of few of their specialties. My only word of caution, is to allow for enough time…we were there for just over an hour and that didn’t feel like enough.
Marwen, thank you so much for agreeing to be part of our project and for graciously allowing us to ask you questions, take your picture and eat whatever you offered to us. I hope to see you again soon…x
The beginning
This started our day, meeting at the metro and then walking down the street to where all the chefs from here buy their fresh, local food for their classes. This area boasts some of the top food shops in all of Paris. Our task was to photograph and briefly interview the store managers, or in some cases the owners, showcasing their incredible product and vast knowledge of their craft.
What an incredible day! I had the pleasure of meeting the most interesting people…and while I don’t speak french, I was able to glean through their excitement, hand gestures and through picking out a few words here and there just how passionate they all are about what they do…and how in a lot of cases, their craft was passed down from generation to generation.
That history, that passion, that knowledge…
Simply the most wonderful thing to catch a glimpse of.
